Working “Something Out” For Illegal Immigrant Students
The speech comes the day after Obama laid out the legal justifications for how he’s prosecuted the war on terror in a 66-page report that revealed how his administration has claimed broad powers to fight the war on terrorism. Obama said his use of drones, for example, had saved civilian lives, arguing that airstrikes would have been less precise and ground troops more deadly. “That’s something you can only experience as president”.
Obama largely ended the US military missions in the two war-torn countries, but the rise of Islamic State militants and the feebleness of the Afghan central government threaten to jeopardize those hard-won USA security gains.
Trump had said at the White House that he would likely be calling on Obama for his “counsel”.
Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser, said in previewing the speech that the president has focused on building partnerships with nations while the United States provides intelligence and training to complement a USA -led coalition air campaign.
He will argue that his administration has been successful in building coalitions and working with local governments to take out militant leaders and disrupt Islamic State and other groups without overextending the US military, the White House said.
“I am deeply concerned that the incoming presidential administration has verbally expressed contempt for this very vulnerable segment of our population and will attempt to misuse the information provided by DACA participants by literally following through on threats of deportations”, she added.
“I’ve spoken to him a lot”, Trump said of Romney.
From the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, to the emergence of ISIL, to the importance of diplomacy and global development, President Obama outlined the actions that he took as commander-in-chief and the lessons that could be drawn from this approach. “Permanently authorized war” is “dangerous” to U.S. democracy, Obama says. “It is not good for our military and it is not good for our democracy”. “Because of this, the Trump administration will inherit a generational struggle that has only gotten longer”.
In describing the nature of the threat after eight years of his leadership, Obama sought to strike a careful balance, arguing at once that “violent extremism will be with us for years to come” and that terrorists “don’t pose an existential threat” to the U.S. He said unlike previous wars against other nations, it was unlikely this conflict would end with a “clearly defined victory”. He said it demonstrates a shift in how the USA takes on terrorists around the world.
In his speech, Obama posited that major changes to his administration’s counterterrorism approach could be detrimental to our country’s national security, and he gave recommendations for continuing the fight against ISIS when he hands over the presidency next month.
“Part of this is putting down a stake that [says], ‘We had it right”. “We’d actually been planning on giving this speech back to September, October”, he said.
Mr Trump was not shy about responding, tweeting at one point that Mr Obama “will go down as perhaps the worst president in the history of the United States!” “The United States of America is not a place where some citizens have to withstand greater scrutiny or carry a special ID card or prove that they’re not an enemy from within”.
“There’s no kind of handbook on how to be president”, Baker said.
Asked about his use of Twitter, and how he had previously said he would aim to be more restrained on the social media platform, Trump said he believed he had, in fact, been more disciplined. “And his fear is that the president-elect and his team will overlook the first, and feel they have to abandon the second in order to retain the element of surprise”.
In touting his record, the president said that there has been no “successful attack” carried out by a major terrorist organization on the US homeland over the past year years and that new partnerships have been built overseas.
