World Athletics Championships: Mo Farah happy to win first gold for Britain
Kenya’s main threat in the 25-lap race is expected to come from double world and Olympic champion Britain’s Mo Farah and Ethiopian trio of Muktar Edris (2012 world junior 5, 000m champion), Mosinet Geremew and Imane Merga.
After Mo Farah won gold in the 10,000 metres at the World Championships in Beijing, he received warm congratulations from fans and fellow athletes everywhere.
Gatlin was quickest with a wind-assisted run of 9.83m.
“So I’m as confident as I can be sitting here that that’s the case”.
It is a moment Farah calls the “biggest disappointment” of his career, although it acted as the catalyst for the incredible success that followed.
Farah has endured a testing summer given doping allegations levelled at his coach Alberto Salazar and his training partner Galen Rupp, which they have strenuously denied.
The BBC aired allegations in June that Salazar, based in the United States, encouraged athletes to break doping rules. “I want to be remembered for someone who did well for his country”. “I still have some adjustments, just have to concentrate on my technique now”.
Farah was braced for a grueling race with the Kenyans promising to test the Briton with a fierce pace.
Enjoying a cute shadow-boxing recreation for six, 000 metres, Farah eventually broke decisively with eight laps remaining, however Kamworor went with him.
Cochrane said he went for it right from the start. She also ran the 200m with a time of 23.94. “I felt some push and it wasn’t the guys I thought”. So I was hanging in there and hoping it would not take it out of me too much.
“I know Gatlin was running very easy but that is how it is”. You can only control what you do and I am controlling what I am doing and winning races.
“Clearly, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind me saying, he has gained additional motivation from some of the challenges and he has turned a negative into a positive and I think that’s how he’s using it”, said Black.
Jessica Ennis-Hill lay in gold medal position after three events of her heptathlon as she made a strong return to the global stage at the World Championships in Beijing.
“As a country, it was nice to see the Kenyans running as a team, sacrificing their own medal for their teammates”, Farah said.
Elsewhere, there were gold medals for Eritrea’s Ghirmay Ghebreslassie in the marathon and Germany’s Christina Schwanitz in the shot put. The two-time drug cheat looked mightily impressive in qualifying fastest for today’s semi-finals. The flashiest part of his showing at the stadium where he won 100 gold with a world record seven years ago were his lemon-yellow coloured shoes. Karoki held off Rupp for fourth and fifth respectively.
Chijindu Ujah is one such talent, with the 21-year-old looking to reach the 100m final after managing 9.96 seconds in successive years. Britain’s Niall Flannery did progress, though, finishing runner-up to American Kerron Clement in his heat in a season’s best 48.90.
That group stayed together through the penultimate lap when Farah finally took the lead.
World No. 1 and reigning champion Caterine Ibarguen of Colombia eased through triple jump qualifying with 14.42m.
