World Health Organization multi-country survey reveals widespread public misunderstanding about
Public health officials have their work cut out in trying to change the way people across the globe use antibiotics, according to a new survey by the World Health Organization.
The focus was on the anti-micro bill and one of them is antibiotic which is an agent of medicine used to treat infections basically such as boils which are caused by bacteria or virus or fungus.
66 percent of the surveyed people thought that if people took their antibiotics personally, they would not be at-risk while 44 percent believed that the antibiotic-resistant infections are only an issue for people who take antibiotics more often.
“I think the poster is a great way to start conversations between prescribers and their patients about what antibiotic resistance is”, said Kristen Nichols, assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Butler.
The White House has also released a National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria in which measures will be taken to prevent antibiotic resistance and save lives affected from it. Antibiotic resistance takes places when bacteria changes in a way that affects the efficacy of antibiotics in curbing their growth.
Other findings of the World Health Organization survey, which covered 10,000 individuals across 12 states, include 76 percent of respondents defining antibiotic resistant as the body being resistant to medication.
Unfortunately, awareness about the growing danger of antibiotic resistance is said to be very low in all countries as many are yet to pay the deserving attention to its public health implications.
Antibiotic Awareness Day provides an ideal opportunity for everyone to confirm their support for using antibiotics responsibly by signing the pledge to become an antibiotic guardian.
Today, if you get a bacterial infection – even a serious one that lands you in a hospital bed – you probably feel confident an antibiotic will cure you.
She said: “While we don’t know for sure how many antibiotics are given to pets we do know more doctors are prescribing them for people, and that more super-resistant types of bacteria are starting to emerge around the world”. For anyone with doubts, here’s a new special report by Consumer Reports called “America’s Antibiotic Crisis”.
The United Nations published the results of the public consciousness survey and said that 64% of the respondents believed that antibiotics may serve as a treatment for influenza and colds. They need to pledge to the better use of antibiotics.
Around a third meanwhile believed it was best to stop an antibiotic treatment as soon as they felt better, rather than completing the prescribed course of treatment, the survey showed. The WHO and the drugs for neglected diseases initiative are working on the creation of a global antibiotic research and development facility that will collaborate closely with the pharmaceutical industry, universities, civil society and health authorities worldwide.
