World Leaders Speak at Historic 70th Session of UN General Assembly
Ahead of this 70th anniversary General Debate, Mr. Ban will present his annual report on the work of the Organization.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon encouraged the 193-member body to look back at the history of the United Nations and all that has been accomplished during the annual meeting as they proceed to discuss complicated issues.
He also spoke about climate change and expressed his hope that the upcoming conference on the issue which will take place in Paris in December will result in a robust agreement. Moreover, leaders will also have discuss the mushrooming crisis and urge nations to embrace more migrants fleeing due to terror and persecution in troubled hot spots of Iraq and Syria.
The first day of the assembly will see speeches by the Presidents of the United States, Russia, France, Kazakhstan, Poland, Korea, South Africa and Belarus.
She will be followed by US President Barack Obama as leader of the host nation.
“People need emergency assistance, but what they want even more is lasting solutions”, he told the General Assembly, “They may appreciate a tent, but they deserve to go home”.
With that in mind, world leaders came together last Friday to agree to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
But, as everyone knows, the Sustainable Development Goals and their motto of “leaving no one behind” will be realized only in a world of peace, security and respect for human rights.
To keep the momentum around the goals and around climate change targets going, I will hold a major meeting next April to showcase where we are making early progress and to identify opportunities for partnerships that deliver change.
The new Agenda is people-centred, universal, transformative and integrated. Member States have been generous, but demands continue to dwarf funding”, said the Secretary-General, urging all countries to do more to alleviate suffering in countries across the world, where one in four children suffers from stunting, and the United Nations appeal “has been met with silence.
