Worst Air Quality In NY Found On Staten Island
The 2018 “State of the Air” report gave Raleigh a grade “B” for ozone pollution with just two unhealthy days a year ago.
While Los Angeles led the nation in ozone pollution, San Diego ranked worse than NY, which came in at 10th. Visalia was the second-most polluted and Fresno ranked third in the latest report.
In Wyoming, Governor Mead led his regulators to quickly put sensible standards in place to require companies in the most polluted region of the state to reduce their emissions.
There are more early deaths from fine particle pollution than deaths from sodium excess, alcohol abuse, or being sedentary, study authors noted. “Pollution that might normally blow into another state gets trapped in California”. Though this winter and spring have seen below-normal temperatures, prior years were among the warmest on record, accounting for more smog year round.
The Los Angeles/Long Beach area remains at the top of this list, as it has for all but one of the 19 reports. That also includes an increase in the level of unhealthy days, the report states. The report ranks the Harrisburg-York-Lebanon metro area among the top 25 worst cities for pollution.
“New York and CT both filed comments with the EPA asking them to take action against a power plant in Pennsylvania, whose air pollution in the ozone is traveling and settling over our region”, said Seilback. Ozone forms in the atmosphere on hot, sunny days.
Recognition of improvements in air quality was welcome news, said Jamie Holt, a spokeswoman for the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.
The findings reveal that more than 95% of the world’s population live in areas where the air they breathe is unsafe and the poorest communities are affected the most. Suffolk has two, one in Babylon and another in Riverhead, lung association officials said Tuesday. And it noted that historic wildfires in 2017 were not captured in the report.
Land use patterns on the Wasatch Front have also contributed to worsening air, Siler said.
“Unfortunately, some in Congress seek changes to the Clean Air Act that would dismantle key provisions of the law and threaten the progress made over almost five decades”, the authors of the report, released Wednesday, explained. “What this recent winter episode showed us is our potential is there for the levels to skyrocket”, he said. “These particles are so small that they can lodge deep in the lungs and trigger asthma attacks, heart attacks and strokes, and can even be lethal”, said Ryan.
Cities are home to an increasing majority of the world’s people, exposing billions to unsafe air, particularly in developing countries, but in rural areas the risk of indoor air pollution is often caused by burning solid fuels.
The “State of the Air” report said six cities qualified as the nation’s cleanest cities.
