‘Worst call’ ends with Pa. officer dead, man charged with killing him
He spent over 20 years in Law Enforcement, serving with the Seven Springs, Hooversville, Seward and most recently St. Clair Township departments.
Emergency crews responded to the area of Creek Road and Grave Yard Hill Road where the officer from St. Clair Township was shot. Limani says a warrant will be obtained Sunday for Shetler’s arrest.
Police said Shetler, who was free on probation in connection with convictions for conspiracy and assault, evaded local, county and state officers for several hours before he was arrested without incident about 3:15 a.m. ET near the town of New Florence.
Gov. Tom Wolf also ordered all flags in the capital complex and all flags at state facilities in Westmoreland County to be lowered to half-staff in memory of Reed.
This is the third death of a police officer in the past 12 months in the rural communities southeast of Pittsburgh, according to the New York Daily News.
State police were on their way to a residence after a woman reported that Shetler bloodied her nose, threatened to kill her and himself, and used a wood-burning stove to fill the house with smoke.
Mr. Shetler told police that as he was leaving the home, a man was pointing a gun at him and “began shooting at him so he returned fire”, according to the criminal complaint.
“It’s tragic”, she said.
Porter, 51, said she is trying to find out more details surrounding the shooting.
Shetler’s girlfriend didn’t respond to a message left on her home phone Monday, but Limani dismissed comments she made to reporters over the weekend that Reed fired at Shetler as he ran away, and was only then shot by Shetler.
