Worthy to issue charging decision in fatal ICE shooting
Prosecutors announced Wednesday that there will be no charges filed against the federal agent who shot and killed a black 20-year-old Detroit man in April.
The incident sparked protests from civil rights leaders, who said the shooting was unjustified. The family’s lawyer, Karri Mitchell, dismissed Worthy’s decision without an independent investigation.
“It’s upsetting – that’s my son”, Kevin Kellom said of Worthy’s decision.
His client’s recommendation is “no settlement” and “the case be tried”.
When agents arrived at his home on Detroit’s west side, Kellom was reportedly hiding inside in an attic, reports CBS Detroit.
David Griem is Quinn’s lawyer.
Griem says, “If there was ever a case in which the shooting was justified, this was it”.
A prosecutor says a U.S. customs agent won’t be charged in the fatal shooting of a Detroit man.
Evidence and witness statements showed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Mitchell Quinn was “justified by the laws of self-defense” in the April 27 shooting death of Terrance Kellom, Prosecutor Kym Worthy said at a news conference.
Police have said Kellom lunged at ICE agent Mitchell Quinn with a hammer before he was shot in his father’s west side home.
“They executed my son in my face”, Kellom’s father, Kevin, said during a rally and protest march shortly after the shooting, according to WWJ.
They say bullet holes in the floor and along the bottom part of the wall support their claim that Kellom was shot multiple times in a downward fashion and that there was no threat on any of the officers’ lives.
Quinn said he fired once, and paused to see if Kellom would drop the weapon, but when Kellom continued to advance he fired several more shots.
