Wright-Phillips, Martins lead Red Bulls past NYC FC, 2
Smith Bradley Wright-Phillips (c.) and the Red Bulls have reason to celebrate after sweeping the season series from NYCFC, their local rival in their first MLS season.
Fans became violent outside of Carmelita Sweet Bakery and Deli on Market Street in Newark, N.J before the MLS matchup between the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC.
New York FC are still struggling to gain some consistency as they have only won once in their last four league games.
The stars were largely neutralized at Red Bull Arena, with the host getting typically strong showings in the center of midfield from Felipe and Dax McCarty with Sacha Kljestan and Mike Grella also starring in front of them. In the 21st minute, a cross from Red Bulls’ defender Kemar Lawrence was missed embarrassingly by NYCFC’s beleaguered defender Jefferson Mena.
With two wins from two in the derby, the Red Bulls are comfortably in possession of the bragging rights after a 2-1 home win was followed up by a 3-1 comeback at Yankee Stadium in June. The ball then rolled to the feet of Bradley Wright-Phillips, who merely had to touch it into an open net. It was something I have never seen before to say the least.
So far, the Red Bulls have dominated the young rivalry.
As close as the match was, NYCFC looked just a bit out paced by the Red Bulls. Recent arrival Andrea Pirlo looked awful, and the NYCFC defense looked weak.
They beat Orlando 5-3 in an exciting match, but have lost to New England and Montreal.
