WTC spire lit in honor of victims of Paris attacks
One World Trade Centre, New York, was one of the first buildings to be lit red, white and blue in support for Paris.
A symbol of the 911 attacks in NY is lit up Friday in solidarity with France.
Andrew Cuomo said the tribute would continue “in the days ahead” as a way to show that “we stand in solemn solidarity with the people of France, just as they have done for us in our own times of tragedy”.
“We join them in mourning those who were killed, and in praying for those who were injured or lost loved ones”.
Cuomo also said, “Today’s horrific attacks in Paris have moved us all, and the more we learn, the more our hearts ache”.
NY police meanwhile were on heightened alert, deploying counter-terrorism reinforcements to crowded places and outside the French mission to the United Nations, and the French consulate.
Social media is awash with public buildings around the world lit up in the French colors of blue, red, and white. NY Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Friday that the spire would be lit the colours of the Tricolor after the news that up to 150 people were feared dead.
Police presences have been beefed up in NY, Boston and Washington DC.
US officials briefed by the Justice Department after the Paris terror attacks tell The Associated Press there is no evidence of any specific or credible threat targeting the American homeland.
Mayor Bill de Blasio also issued a directive for all flags to fly at half-staff in honor of the victims.
