Wu-Tang Clan’s “Once Upon A Time in Shaolin” Album Purchased
According to the agreement, the buyer can do whatever he or she wants with the album, but cannot “commercialize” it for at least 88 years. “Millions of what?” you might find yourself asking, given that the album spent much of the year in limbo and was ridiculed even by members of the group who appeared on its 31 tracks.
Forbes have announced that auction house Paddle8 have sold that ‘secret’ Wu-Tang Clan album, Once Upon A Time In Shaolin, to a private collector.
One single Wu-Tang Clan album has sold for millions.
From the moment the Wu-Tang Clan splashed onto the scene with their classic album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), they instantly became hip-hop heroes to millions of fans and are still revered today as rap legends.
RZA added that a portion of the album’s proceeds would go to charity. Last year, it was also reported that veteran Pop superstar Cher is a featured guest on Once Upon A Time In Shaolin.
The album, housed in a nickel-and-silver box by the British-Moroccan artist Yahya, was actually sold back in May, reports Forbes. The sale occurred in May, but the contract wasn’t finalized until recently. Only one copy would be pressed and it would be auctioned the highest bidder. At this point, it seems more likely that Once Upon a Time in Shaolin’s going to take up residence in the buyer’s living room or vault than in various worldwide salons.
“I think the only way to establish value in something is for it to be exclusive”. There were eight original members of the collective, for instance, and the auctioneer has the number in its name. And that’s what Once Upon a Time in Shaolin is. “With the addition of the speakers, the buyer is able to achieve the ultimate, museum-quality sonic experience with the same speakers that RZA and Cilvaringz used to master the album”.
