WWE star Finn Balor relinquishes title after SummerSlam injury
Fan favorite Finn Balor finally accomplished what many wanted him to – he beat perpetual heel Seth Rollins at Sunday’s SummerSlam pay-per-view for WWE’s new Universal Championship belt. Boy did it ever. The match was good, but went as expected.
The first match of WWE Summerslam 2016’s kickoff show was the huge 12-man tag team match, pitting the six tag teams of SmackDown Live against each other in a three-team-on-three team match.
Balor showed his toughness in completing the match after taking this bad bump off the barricade. Ziggler will go out and possibly put on one of the best matches in his career, but it’s nearly guaranteed that he is going to get hit by Dirty Deeds at the end. Your victor at Summerslam and once again WWE Women’s Champion, Charlotte!
The hostility toward the belt was quickly replaced with boisterous applause when Balor won the WWE title, ushering in a new era.
Earlier in the night, SmackDown Lives Dolph Ziggler faced WWE World champion Dean Ambrose, following introductions by Shane McMahon and megastar Daniel Bryan, whose Yes! chants were deafening.
Match 3 – Intercontinental Championship, (c) Miz w/ Maryse vs Apollo Crews: In what was the weakest match of the night, and believe me, not because of Crews, Miz retained his belt by using the Skull-Crushing Finale.
WWE Universal Title Contender’s Match: Roman Reigns def. Chris Jericho (with Kevin Owens) by pin following the Spear to advance to the WWE Universal Title match next week.
Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton: What should be the main event, as it’s the strongest match on the card, and it has Brock Lesnar involved so that automatically should qualify it to hold that spot.
A new tournament was then set-up on Raw where winners from four separate matches would then compete next week in a Fatal 4-Way match for the Universal Championship.
It looked like Enzo and Cass were in control and ready to get the win, but they ended up falling to Jericho and Owens. As always, Styles put on an wonderful performace as he continued to #BeatUpJohnCena in every way, shape and form.
The scheduled match between Rusev and Roman Reigns never happened because they couldn’t keep their hands off of each other, in the violent sense of the phrase. In the, however, The Miz delivered the win, retaining his title.
Carmella, Naomi and Becky Lynch will face Natalya and Alexa Bliss. Bayley came back, but a more dominant win to show that Bayley was on a path to Charlotte would have been slightly better than what they did here. However, that caused The New Day to be disqualified. Rousing ovations greeted all parties and Zayn and Neville scored the pinfall.
Sheamus got the better of Cesaro in their first match of the best-of-seven series, winning with a Brogue Kick after he gouged Cesaro in the eye. However they go about it, I expect one of the greatest tag teams of all time to take the loss.
