Xena: Warrior Princess Could Return to Television… But Should It
But until we do, Xena: Warrior Princess is getting a reboot, from original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, through NBC and NBC Universal. While there’s no word whether or not Lawless will be involved in the rumored reboot – and her rep was not immediately available for comment – we know the actress is definitely a fan of bringing Xena back.
According to THR, the new Xena series will take a new lens to the cult heroine, who’ll be a blend of Lucy Lawless and Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. She was Xena, a mighty princess forged in the heat of battle. Lucy Lawless will be very pleased!
“There’s a swell of interest still and I’m always peppered with questions: ‘When’s the Zena movie coming out?'”. Despite ending nearly 15 years ago, the show still has a passionate fanbase, so NBC will have all eyes on them as this project develops.
During her appearance at Comic Con for her new show Ash vs. Evil Dead, Lawless told website Den of Geek she was interested in crowdfunding a new season of Xena. Guys, I’m pitching my ass off to make it happen, whether it’s with me or not. “But that’s a piss-poor excuse anymore. Don’t waste this opportunity; reinvigorate that franchise!” she said, stressing the show’s worldwide appeal. Picture an older Xena 30 years removed from the series who is still trying to have adventures while experiencing a hard time putting on the armor or even throwing her weapons. “It’s amusing, it’s sexy, it’s action”.
The drama is being called a “modern reboot” and it’s unclear if Lawless would return to the series, and in what way.
Xena was only supposed to appear in three episodes of the Hercules series before dying, but producers decided to give the character her own series when she proved a fan favourite.
