Xiaomi launches first made in India smartphone
Foxconn Technology Group has begun assembling Xiaomi Corp.’s first made-in-India smartphone from a new plant in the country’s south, helping the Chinese company shorten delivery times and prop up margins.
At the event, Xiaomi will also make announcement about its expansion plan in India. With this, the Chinese firm will join the list of other smartphone makers like Asus, Motorola and Gionee that are considering manufacturing in India, where the government is pushing its “Make in India” initiative.
We knew it was coming and now we can tell you that the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime price for India has been announced at its official launch in the country.
This isn’t the first time that Xiaomi has announced that it’s going to manufacture its products outside of India. The Wall Street Journal points out that it already makes some phones locally in Brazil.
“When we started out in July last year, we wanted to become part of the fabric of India”, said Hugo Barra, vice president of Xiaomi Global.

On this occasion, Xiaomi has launched Redmi 2 Prime, which is assembled in India.
In the past, Xiaomi has said it is exploring options for manufacturing in India.
Amitabh Kant, secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) said, “Xiaomi is a unique example of “Invested by China, Made in India”.
The Redmi 2 Prime has 16 GB of internal memory and a 32 GB micro SD card slot.
“We have always said India is a key market for us”.

The latest word is that the device will be offered for sale at the equivalent of $177 Dollars, although a previous leak showed the phone priced at the equivalent of 8 USD. Built on 64-bit Snapdragon 410 quad-core 1.2 GHz processor, it comes with 4G enabled dual SIM with 150 Mbps download speed. Besides, the Redmi 2 Prime has an 8 megapixel rear camera that comes along with an LED flash light and a 2 megapixel front camera.
Smartphone manufacturers are climbing over each other to take full advantage of the rapidly expanding market opportunities in India.
