Yahoo Is Shuttering 7 of Its 11 Digital Magazines
However, Yahoo Tech news has managed to sneak away and the company has made a decision to continue this content vertical. You can still see them if you visit the site right this moment, but Yahoo is beginning the process of fading out Yahoo Autos, Food, Health, Makers, Parenting, Real Estate, and Travel. The company’s Global Editor-in-Chief Martha Nelson has recently announced that Yahoo will now be phasing out some of their digital magazines.
The announcement comes on the heels of several reports on Wednesday indicating that layoffs were imminent at the company. As per the news in media, Dann Tynan, Yahoo Tech’s editor in chief, will be leaving the company.
Politico cited a source familiar with the matter in reporting that Yahoo was ending its tech vertical and transferring some of its staff – including the newly arrived Pogue – to Yahoo’s news vertical.
Some employees from the Yahoo branch in Singapore have been informed that they were being laid off on Thursday (Feb 18), confirmed a company spokesperson. It forecast the closure of some of its magazines and said that its media properties would now focus on Sports, News, Finance and Lifestyle.
The purge is part of Mayer’s effort to cut costs at Yahoo as the company attempts to develop a strategy to deal with what is both the company’s biggest asset and something of a strategic curse-its massive windfall from an investment in the Chinese e-commerce website Alibaba.
Re/code, for example, is reporting that the beauty vertical is also being cut. That source said that Yahoo Tech is not shutting down, but will lose some staff.
“As we make these changes, we acknowledge the talent and dedication of an extraordinary group of journalists who brought new and newsworthy content to Yahoo”.
