Yankees 1B Teixeira on DL due to knee
The New York Yankees finally showed signs of breaking out of their offensive slumber, and the timing couldn’t be better as they visit the Baltimore Orioles on Friday for the opener of their three-game series.
Teixeira left Friday’s game against the Orioles after appearing to injure his knee during his first at-bat of the contest.
New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is dealing with another injury, this time to his right knee, which caused him to leave Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees replaced him with Rob Refsnyder for the rest of the game, but with Dustin Ackley recently sidelined for the rest of the year with a torn labrum, the Yankees will have to figure out a solution for a first baseman. The Birds pounded out eleven hits and walked once with Chris Davis going deep and scoring twice with Matt Weiters knocking in two while Mark Trumbo went 3-4 with two runs. The results were not available after the game, but with the Yankees this season and Teixiera the past three or four, it is always prudent to assume the worst. Tillman stretched his unbeaten streak to eight starts after allowing four runs and four hits – three homers – over six innings at Cleveland on Sunday.
“Now I’m more comfortable”, Kim said, “and this feels like the baseball I used to play”. The OPS of just 0.670 is also pretty ugly, especially with the high number of supposed home run hitters on the active roster.
“We try to tell everybody down there, when a phone calls needs to be made, make sure you’re the one that gets recommended”, Cashman said.
But on this night, other forces intervened to get Refsnyder onto the field, in the most unlikely plot of real estate. By subtly mentioning retired Yankee legends Deter Jeter and Jorge Posada, Girardi stated, “this isn’t the first time I’ve had to go through this”.
“It’s the reality of the game”, Girardi said. “It’s something he’s dealt with before, and today he said he felt it a little bit”. Apparently, Girardi wasn’t ready to reprise Carlos Beltran’s awkward cameo from a few years back. The injury has been diagnosed as a right knee articular cartilage tear, and the veteran was placed on the DL Saturday. He’s mired in a 3-for-43 slump dating to May 17 and hasn’t homered in his last 142 at-bats. Baltimore RHP Yovani Gallardo (right shoulder biceps tendinitis) did not have any setbacks in his first rehab start at Class A Frederick on Thursday.
TIGERS 10, WHITE SOX 3: James McCann had three hits, including a triple and a homer for host Detroit. He will next throw 75 to 80 pitches in five-plus innings for Triple-A Norfolk on June 7.
