Yankees get INF Castro from Cubs for RHP Warren, plus player

Let’s begin with the positives. He gets to play out the probable end of his useful career on a team that should be in a position to compete for the playoffs every year, and for a manager he presumably likes. 295 batting average against lefties to help them out.

For starters, teams around Major League Baseball have already reached out to the Cubs with interest in Warren.

Depends on how you frame it. With Castro taking over at second base, Refsnyder’s immediate path to the big leagues is blocked.

Yet it is now obvious that the Yankees weren’t completely confident in the tandem. They wanted Zobrist badly, publicly singling him out as their top priority as they try to improve a roster that appeared in the World Series in 2015. He’s spent most of his career at shortstop, but shifted over to second base later this past season.

Whether Castro can keep that up with the Yankees remains to be seen.

The present and future is younger, more athletic, with more maneuverability. While he was originally pegged as one of the best players in the Yankees farm system, an apparent attitude problem took him out of favor with the team’s brass.

Expect Warren to be used in both roles as a starter and a reliever, similar to how the Yankees used him. And while Ryan is a good clubhouse guy, he is merely a strong defensive replacement late in games at this point in his career.
