Yankees GM Brian Cashman on trades: ‘I’m open to anything’
According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports/MLB Network, NY is listening to offers on Miller and the Yankees could be looking to improve their starting rotation.
Though no trade is imminent, if the Yankees do in fact move Miller, they don’t necessarily need to acquire another closer because they can just slot Dellin Betances into the closers role. They were a playoff team in 2015 with 87 wins, and there’s a good chance that they could contend again for the postseason in 2016, but they have to find a way to get better and finish the season on a stronger note than they did this past September/October.
“‘We’ve got a lot of guys that are going to be vying for those five spots”, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday at the annual GMs meetings in Boca Raton, Florida. “Finding matches is always hard, but you have to go through the process”, Cashman said.
Cashman made five trades before the calendar turned previous year, giving up guys such as Shane Greene, Martin Prado and Justin Wilson to fill key holes on the roster.
Even with all the quality pitching free agents on the market this winter, Washington Nationals’ fans should get used to seeing Stephen Strasburg’s name around in all trade rumors this offseason since Strasburg is in the final year of his contract.
Cashman was alluding to Rob Refsnyder and Dustin Ackley when he mentioned the Yankees’ “two offensive-profile players”. “I think we’re going to continue to look at that”.
This all comes off of a Yankees team that is still licking their wounds from a Wild Card loss against the Houston Astros. With not much money coming off payroll this winter, Cashman will probably be up to his usual tricks again this winter.
