Yankees Insider: For highly touted Refsnyder, it’s showtime
Over his last 10 games, he’s hitting.
Refsnyder entered Friday with a.290/.387/.413 slash line, seven homers and 37 RBIs in 81 games.
Drew was not given full blame for his unsatisfactory 2014 campaign, as his struggles were often credited to not having a full Spring Training to prepare for the season.
“No, I don’t”, he said. 440 (11 for 25) with four-extra base hits.
The right-handed Refsnyder will be likely be the Yankees’ starting second baseman on both Saturday and Sunday against two Red Sox’s left-handed starters.
Infield coach Joe Espada said Refsnyder looked better in spring training than when he watched him past year as a scout.
“We’ve heard that he’s improved and that he’s making strides and we’re going to find out”, Girardi said. Meanwhile the Boston second baseman, Brock Holt, committed a couple of gaffes that practically insured his team would lose.
The odds are that even if he has lost his second base job – for the rest of the weekend, at least – Drew is still going to be around. Drew doesn’t know exactly how he’ll fit when Refsnyder comes up, but he did say he was extremely happy for Refsnyder and couldn’t wait to see him play.
Well, as it happens, the team has just made a headline move for the position, but rather than bringing in a veteran the Yankees will be issuing a promotion to blue-chip prospect Rob Refsnyder. “I’m looking forward to seeing what we’ve got”. The move of Refsnyder coming up could mean the Yankees are ready to make a transition at second base. Brief power surges aside, Stephen Drew has struggled to the tune of a 72 wRC+ and below-replacement -0.3 WAR.
