Yankees pitcher Mitchell hit by liner, has nasal fracture
The Yankees (66-52) scored eight runs and posted double-digit hits in each of their first two wins against the Twins in this series, which coincided with two straight victories by Toronto that have kept their AL East lead at one game.
“It seems like your heart just drops into your stomach and you’re scared for the kid and you see blood coming out”.
“Wow, I’m lucky for sure”, Mitchell said to Andrew Marchand of ESPN on Tuesday.
It was theorized by some that the heavy hit could have broken Mitchell’s jaw, which would have made him the second prominent New York athlete to suffer that injury within a week. Kyle Gibson for giving up 6 earned runs, Perkins for loading the bases, Eddie Rosario for dropping a fly ball in the 10th inning, Nunez for booting the ground ball in an overloaded infield.
Brian McCann played a starring role as he homered and drove home five runs for the Yankees. The catcher also threw out three runners trying to steal.
“It was a draining game”, manager Paul Molitor of the 4-hour, 13-minute slog, the Twins’ longest game of the year.
Chase Headley, who pinched hit in the seventh to help start that rally, got a double.
It was not a good sight at the Yankees stadium, as Bryan, making only his third start of career, was struck on the head. “To hear him talk and see him walk off the field was helpful for us to be able to try to move on the best we can”. He was taken to a hospital and released. But after a medical examination, the Yankees said he had a nasal fracture and would be monitored for a possible concussion. This has caused enough of a worry that Major League Baseball has introduced protective caps that pitchers can choose to wear, but they’re big and bulky and are hardly used. They haven’t come up with anything that looks very practical as of yet. “The face is pretty much something that’s going to be unprotected, no matter what you do”, he told NJ.com.
The teams traded leads before Beltran delivered a two-run homer off Brian Duensing to tie the game at 7-7 in the sixth.
Of greater significance, it was Rodriguez’s third go-ahead home run this year hit in the seventh inning or later. Beltran was intentionally walked to bring up Headley – and the defining moment of the night.
PLUS: Yankees’ Mark Teixeira won’t play Wednesday…
“We knew it was our turn up”, O’Rourke said.
Sabathia then lost his shutout bid when Suzuki doubled to left field. “He was still really sore today”, manager Joe Girardi said. Yankees were facing the Minnesota Twins when the incident occurred, sending the pitcher to the hospital. He gave up the lone run and four hits with four strikeouts and has now received 18 runs of support over his last two outings.
One swing against Twins reliever J.R. Graham changed everything. In the prior three weeks, he had only connected with the ball once for a meager single, reports the New York Times.
