Yankees Rookie Dustin Fowler Ruptures Tendon in 1st Inning of MLB Debut
Andrew Marchand is a senior writer for ESPNNewYork.
“We were talking about what we were going to do, ” manager Joe Girardi said, still shaken by the Fowler injury.
A spokesman for the Major League Baseball Players Association said in an email to The Associated Press, “We are gathering information and anticipate discussing this with Major League Baseball, ” when asked about the Yankees saying a lack of padding caused Fowler’s injury. “I’m not used to seeing that”. “I can’t imagine a worse scenario for him”.
Chicago evened the score with a second-inning unearned run as Gary Sanchez, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored on Adam Engel’s long fly to right with two out that was misplayed by Rob Refsnyder, Fowler’s replacement. He had flown from Syracuse for his major-league debut, when waited almost three hours through a rain delay. Instead, he had emergency surgery.
“This is a journey I’ve gone through my whole life, ” Fowler said from his hospital bed. “And (Thursday) was probably one of the tougher nights”.
As of Friday afternoon, Tyler Wade still hadn’t seen a replay of Dustin Fowler’s gruesome injury from the night before – and didn’t plan on seeing one.
The 22-year-old Fowler hit.293 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs this year for the RailRiders and was selected to play in the International League All-Star Game. Girardi wouldn’t confirm that Frazier would definitely be activated Saturday, but he spoke about what role Frazier would have if he is called up. He is expected to recover in time for spring training.
And much later than they anticipated, the Yankees – after splitting a four-game series with Chicago – trudged off to Houston to play the team with the AL’s best record.
It is not clear who would be sent down to make room for Frazier.
New York Yankees outfielder Dustin Fowler had a memorable major league debut on Thursday, but for all the wrong reasons.
“I’m sick to my stomach, especially after all the hard work he put in to finally get his shot, ” Judge said. According to The New York Times, he told reporters when he arrived at Chicago White Sox’s Guaranteed Rate Field on Thursday that he was “overwhelmed” and “ready to get comfy here”. “I haven’t really had my changeup this year quite yet”.
“I would simply say that that young man went after the ball with tremendous vigor”, Renteria said.
On Friday, the Yankees let Fowler know they’re still thinking about him.
Fowler, who had flown in from Syracuse, New York, for his debut, did not get an at-bat. He allowed three runs – two earned – and five hits in 6 1/3 innings in his third start since spending two months on the disabled list with a strained right lat.
