Yankees sign 1B Ike Davis
The Yankees are on the verge of signing Ike Davis to a major-league deal, according to a source with knowledge of Davis’ plans.
Davis is expected to join the Yankees at some point, it’s not clear when he will report to the team, but he will be in a platoon situation with him and Refsnyder; Davis will probably play against the right-handed pitchers since he’s a lefty hitter.
Since their other options at first base like Chris Parmelee and Dustin Ackley have found their way onto the disabled list and Nick Swisher slumping in Scranton, the Yankees have a need for Davis.
A Refsnyder-Davis duo should be enough to hold down the position until Teixeira makes his way back from injury.
Rob Refsynder, New York’s current starting first baseman, had never played the position before last month.
The Yankees are bringing in Davis, the former Met, after the first baseman was released by the Rangers earlier Sunday.
He saw a limited role with the Oakland Athletics last season, hitting.229 with three home runs.
Davis’ agreement with the Yankees means he’s returning to NY, where he began his career with the Mets and where his father, Ron, pitched for the Bombers from 1978-81.
In 2,377 career major league plate appearances, Davis has slashed.239/.332/.416 with 81 home runs, a career-high 32 of which came in 2012.
NY went into Sunday’s game against Detroit with Rob Refsnyder starting at first base.
