Yankees Still Covet Kyle Schwarber In Trade With Cubs
Flipping Chapman, Beltran and Miller for some young talent for the future seems like a no-brainer, but the stubbornness of the likes of ownership will prove dividend to the future of the Yankees. The teams mentioned the most in a deal for Chapman or Miller are the Cubs, Indians, Rangers, and Washington. As cool as it is having him, Andrew Miller, and Dellin Betances at the backend of the bullpen, it hasn’t exactly been useful when the team can’t get the ball to them in the first place. Chapman is eligible for free agency following this season, and could represent a rental for a team looking for a postseason push.
The Yankees are going to trade Chapman before August 1, Yahoo’s Jeff Passan wrote July 17.
Some small market teams would like an worldwide draft, like the amateur draft, so the teams with more scouting resources wouldn’t have a significant edge. They just don’t have enough everywhere else to ride a stellar bullpen into the World Series, the way the Royals have done it the past two seasons.
Miller, the 6-foot-7 left-hander who can close or setup, went into the second half with a 1.37 ERA and 0.71 WHIP. According to Buster Olney, a player being shopped by them is Chapman.
There has been a lot of talk about what it would take for the Cubs to pry Miller away from NY. Offering Vogelbach may be the Cubs best chance at acquiring Miller. The Yankees need to hang on to their players, because selling would hurt them more than help them. Sports, the Yankees could be eyeing Kyle Schwarber as a potential trade target for their relievers.
“Cash thinks he can hit 50 home runs there”, a source told the New York Post, which alludes Schwarber’s lefty power and the Yankees short porch in right field. First and foremost, the two that Law mentioned – Justus Sheffield and Bobby Bradley – look like flawless pieces to trade for a reliever, if the Yankees are building for a couple years down the line.
The Cubs have not missed a beat with Schwarber sidelined, so it would make sense for the Yankees to at least ask about his availability. But since Schwarber can’t help the Cubs this season, sending him to NY for a reliever like Miller, who has 70 strikeouts in 41.1 innings, would be in Chicago’s best interest for the immediate future.
