Yaya Toure slams Confederation after African Football of the Year snub
André Ayew, the Ghana forward who plays for Swansea City in the English Premier League, came third with 112 points. “I’m quite disappointed, but I don’t want to complain too much”, he said after the announcement, according to the BBC.
“This is what makes the shame of Africa”. But what can we do about it?
Expanding on his frustration, Toure said Africans “do not show that Africa is important to us”.
“We give priorities to things that happen outside the continent than things that take place here”.
“Yaya will take care of Yaya and let Africa take care of itself”.
“I’m very happy and content”, said Aubameyang.
Aubameyang has probably had his best year ever in his career, as the striker scored 41 goals in all competitions in 2015 and also provided 10 assists. I worked hard and I merit the award.
Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang speaks after winning the Confederation of African Football (CAF) award for African footballer of the year, in Abuja, Nigeria January 7, 2016.
Aubameyang is quoted as saying by Football365: “I don’t want to go to Arsenal”.
Yaya Toure deserves better than to be questioned regularly, according to Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini.
Toure had managed to remain gracious on the podium as he, Aubameyang and Ayew collected their awards and congratulated the Dortmund striker on his calendar year. “The fans always appreciate what he does in the game so I hope he will continue the same”.
“Because Cote d Ivoire won the Cup of Nations is not a criteria to award him the award”.
The “African achievements” bit is directed at the fact that he led Ivory Coast to victory in the African Cup of Nations previous year, finally capturing the trophy that has long eluded him and his super-talented Ivorians.
“I am not usually an emotional person but to win this award, with players like Yaya and Dede [Ayew], is an important moment for me”.
