Yes, Virginia, The Election WAS All About Trump
Why is that? Consider the mountain Democrats had to climb in order to even have a chance at controlling the state legislature.
But if he keeps tweeting the way he does, the president will never win more friends in the Republican Party. And as for the rest: Remember that Republicans had reached a historic high-water mark nearly everywhere, so it’s no surprise that Democrats will find some easy seats to win back. Northam won by more than eight percentage points. Democrat slates were “overwhelmingly” the winners in this pair of statewide contests, offering convincing “proof” that voters in New Jersey and Virginia, and therefore, the entire nation itself, had dramatically and convincingly repudiated Donald Trump and the entire GOP.
But I don’t understand the Republicans and conservatives who joined in and said the elections were a sign of doom for the GOP in the 2018 elections. “It’s hard to argue with the results at the ballot box”. “And he ran to make Virginia a better commonwealth”. About all they can do is plug away at policies (including, presumably, the tax bill) that they believe will deliver good economic results, and hope that’s enough to stabilize support for the party or even improve it a bit.
And in New Jersey, a true-blue state, the only Republican politician who was repudiated on Tuesday was Mr. Unpopularity himself, outgoing Gov. Chris Christie.
They added a governor in New Jersey and protected an open seat in Virginia. The once highly conservative Granite State has been flooded to blue by Taxachusetts residents fleeing the Bay State’s onerous tax burden.
Virginia is now in a similar process of red-to-blue state conversion.
These races could be the first wave of opposition to Trump’s unpopular presidency, although the long-term trend remains unclear.
But other Republicans disagree with her conclusion. “This is not about the president”, the source told the Examiner. What do you think about that?
Taylor’s candid assessment reflects a bit of history.
“These are blue states that the president did not win previous year”.
Putnam went on to acknowledge voter dissatisfaction without mentioning Trump. But significant parts of it voted for Northam on Tuesday.
In special elections in Georgia, Democrats claimed three seats previously held by Republicans – all three in suburban areas. It was big night for Democrats across the country. “There’s no question about it”, Taylor told CNN. Gillespie did have a 44-point advantage among the 57 percent of Virginians who want Confederate monuments to stay – but Northam had a whopping 83-point advantage among the 38 percent who want them down. Voters there backed Clinton a year ago while also voting for Comstock, but her seat is among the top targets for Democrats. It is the reason the Democrats’ Congressional leaders, Sen.
In Washington state, local elections revealed that being Trumpist, or even just having the label of Republican, could prove fatal. “But the exit poll numbers show that young people were committed to this election, that African-Americans were committed to this election”. Republicans are divided, with many traditional Republicans finding Trump more revolting every day. “Virginia is the quintessential snapshot of the country’s mood”.
We’ve been watching, hearing and reading the most unbelievable “analysis” imaginable with regard to the this past Tuesday’s off-year election results in New Jersey and Virginia.
“We anticipate there is ample energy to push this through”, says Tiffany Hankins, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. Northam “didn’t light the world on fire, and he turned those voters out”.
And they beat Republicans by running as bold progressives, weaving their powerful personal stories into their campaign narratives. Democrats picked up two other seats in Georgia, as well as seats in MI and New Hampshire. The race was supposed to be decided by a percent or two. Florida’s a state that Trump won. Throughout the campaign, Northam accused Trump – and Gillespie by extension – of promoting environmental deregulation and pollution in the state. Democrats on Tuesday came close to taking a majority in the state House of Delegates, though final results won’t be known until later this week. “But, yeah, go ahead and dismiss the lesson from last night”.
