Yoenis Cespedes discusses his first contract requirement
Cespedes, who turns 30 next month, will be seeking a contract of at least six years this winter, he told ESPN.com before the Mets’ 5-1 win against the New York Yankees at Citi Field on Friday night.
“A little different in some ways”, he said.
Piazza became a Met in a May 22, 1998, trade with the Florida Marlins (eight days after the Marlins acquired him from the Los Angeles Dodgers). His bat has had an explosive impact on New York’s offense in the present (and could in the future as well), but a long-term deal for the 29-year-old could further hamper an organization that has experienced financial difficulties for most of this decade. Cespedes has played 44 games for the Metropolitans and is leading the way toward a National League East title with 17 home runs and 42 RBI in that span.
Suarez said, “If they need me at another position, I would try to play there”.
Piazza said of the qualities he sees in this Mets team, “I think the true sign of a really good ballclub is a team that bounces back from adversity, a team that goes through challenges, be that pitching challenges or offensive challenges”. You’re still a presence complimenting David and the lefties.
Piazza signed a new contract and stayed with the Mets, who made it to the postseason in 1999 and to the World Series a year later (when they lost to the Yankees). I think each time is unique. “Do I see some similarities? And it seems like they’re starting to believe that they can beat anybody, and that’s big, as well”.
Time will tell if the Mets will pay up for Cespedes’ services, but they aren’t anxious about that at the moment.
