Yoenis Cespedes’ market shrinks as Detroit Tigers sign Justin Upton
He also included that as many as 10 teams are still in contact with Cespedes’ camp.
While many teams are interested in Cespedes – especially if he’s fielding short-term contracts – the Angels, Mets, Tigers and White Sox remain the favorites to acquire his signature.
It’s going to take a deal in the range of five years for between $75-$90 million to sign Cespedes.
That might slim Cespedes’ market to a few logical fits. The deal would probably include well over $100 million and last for 5 or more years. If Moya is that all-or-nothing against minor-league pitchers, it’s hard to envision him amounting to much in the majors, no matter how much raw power he possesses.
Cespedes had a ton of success last season, batting.291/.328/.542 to complement 35 home runs and 107 RBIs.
Then again, Jon Heyman reported yesterday that there is “no chance” Cespedes will have to settle for a “very short deal”. As a result, a Cespedes signing might not be as imminent as Bowden suggests. One other thing to consider: If the Tigers do add Cespedes, the organization, as a first time luxury-tax offender, would pay the minimum tax this season.
While Cespedes had a better year than Upton, he has waited this long to make a decision. With Spring Training fast approaching, Cespedes may pick a team sooner rather than later.
