Yogi Berra’s Tuesday funeral to be televised
Former New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera, center, arrives at Church of the Immaculate Conception prior to funeral services for New York Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra, Tuesday, September 29, 2015, in Montclair, N.J. The baseball legend known for his quirky sayings died September 22. Many took to social media to share memories and photos of him through the years.
“Yogi gets out of the vehicle in uniform”, Torre says.
A high school dropout, Yogi Berra got his nickname after a childhood friend told him he looked like a Hindu yogi in a movie they saw. “He will truly be missed”. We’ll remember Yogi Berra as a great Yankees player always and forever – and a great American icon, too. In 1999, he was one of 100 players selected to Major League Baseball’s All-Century team. He also had 10 World Series rings to his credit, and to top it all off, he caught the only flawless game in World Series history, thrown by Don Larsen in 1956. Dolan shared a word with the family before leaving and hugged Berra’s eldest son, Larry. As impressive a player as Berra was, he was an even better person.
Lawrence Peter Berra, who died Tuesday at 90, had a knack for being where the action was.
Berra was AL MVP in 1951, 1954 and 1955.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York drew similarities between Berra and a visitor who just left the United States and returned to Rome. He dropped out of school in 8th grade to help his family financially.
This funeral was private _ a public memorial service will be held Sunday at the Yogi Berra Museum in Little Falls _ but speakers outside the church broadcast the service to the neighborhood. He then reached out to studio hosts Bob Lorenz, Jack Curry, and David Cone – each of whom was extremely close to Berra in his own way – to prepare them to anchor the Yogi Berra Remembered telecast.
Much of Yogi’s personality is captured in what are fondly referred to as “Yogi-isms“, the pithy statements he delivered throughout his life that served to illustrate his unique worldview in the most memorable ways.
