Yogi Berra visited dying teammate daily
He’s previously written guest posts on Tim McClelland, Frankie Crosetti, the No. 26, Casey Stengel, and Leo Durocher.
Berra, the Hall of Fame catcher who passed away Tuesday at the age of 90, lived across the street, at 5447 Elizabeth. Berra was a Yankee legend for many generations dating back to the 1940s. But to Berra, the final score will always be: “Yanks 6, Dodgers 4”. You’ll have many choices of home type, neighborhood, how much to put down, and what type of mortgage to use.
He soon learned Carmen had mistaken him for Terry Moore, a St. Louis Cardinals outfielder.
His was a calming influence, usually. On September 25, the “Mighty Atom”, Miller Huggins was gone. His plaque notes his three AL MVP awards and famous “It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over” saying and praises him as ‘a legendary Yankee’. He however, did study at the University of Cincinnati and was accepted to the state bar in 1902. On this rainy day, they were Connecticut Yankees, wearing their pinstripes on dark suits and dress shirts instead of uniforms, and yarmulkes instead of baseball caps.
White Sox manager Robin Ventura echoed the sentiment, treasuring the days when he played for the Yankees and Berra would wander into the clubhouse.
On February 3, 1910, the Reds traded Huggins to the St. Louis Cardinals along with outfielder Rebel Oakes and pitcher/infield/outfielder Frank Corridon for pitcher Fred Beebe and infielder Alan Storke. It was really something’. However, his performance as a manager of the Cardinals came with lackluster success as he could never get the team higher than third in the league.
The Jays’ main rivals in their division have been the pinstriped boys from the Bronx, the New York Yankees.
We got home just in time to turn on the radio broadcast and hear new closer Wade Davis shut down the Mariners in the top of the 10th and – at long last – the return of Royals ecstasy, when Lorenzo Cain drove home the long-legged Brazilian, Paulo Orlando, for the game-winning run.
On Thursday, the New Jersey Senate also honored Berra with a moment of silence in the chamber. While this is definitely a bit of a black mark on his record, at least these hearings helped to change the culture of the game in a positive way, much like those players who testified to the grand jury about steroids twenty years later. After four years of trying, 1923 was the charm. Righetti’s dad, Leo, was a shortstop in the Yankees’ farm system, played for Lefty Gomez and roomed with Jerry Coleman, both San Franciscans. His on-the-field career, including his incredible World Series statistics, often receives more attention than his off-the-field influence, especially on the sports world. It was that I was in awe of all the Yankees in that era.
Berra, while stationed in Groton during World War II, played a handful of games against the West Haven Sailors and Yale during the summer of 1945, suiting up for the submarine base’s team. He led the American League in saves one year while pitching for the Blue Jays during Joe Carter’s day.
The 1929 season was a bit different.
But the diminutive man was capable of some towering achievements on the baseball field. There is a general belief that the poorer performance in the 1929 season affected Huggins emotionally and health-wise, because he couldn’t stand to see his “machine” fall apart.
The response to the death of Huggins was extensive.
It’s also because everybody knows that Berra’s great legacy is not entirely about baseball.
I was a columnist for Hearst’s flagship evening daily, the New York Journal-American.
‘When he came in, there wasn’t a guy who didn’t want to talk to him, ‘ Ventura said. “His numbers are incredible, but his presence and how he dealt with people were really the biggest thing”. The columnist said: “Now Huggins has gone”.
Tom Brady is good enough on his own.
“A lot of the Yankee guys weren’t big”. The next year he continued to hit well but his throwing was so erratic he was shifted to the outfield then benched.
From that inimitable Yogi squelch, The Bomber and The Maven became good friends. Sentner believed that no one else on the team suffered more from the loss of Huggins than Ruth. But at the same time, it’s a viewer sport now and not a playing sport for a lot of people. Ruppert was visibly shaken that Huggins was gone (along with Ed Barrow).
