You can finally order your very own Blocks modular smartwatch
Modular smartphones haven’t really taken off yet, despite a few valiant efforts, but the London-based group of technologists is hoping that the smartwatch will prove to be a better candidate for put-it-together-like-Lego technology. BLOCKS is now available through Kickstarter and has already met its $250,000 goal. As the image above shows, the company has devised a variety of Blocks modules that could be used to enhance your smartwatch experience.
There are a number of modules to choose from, with options including an extra battery module, a heart rate monitor module, a Global Positioning System module, an NFC module, and an adventure module, which includes sensors like temperature, pressure and altitude. For instance, you can simply carry a secondary battery module with you and swap out the empty battery when needed. BLOCKS Wearables is also planning other modules like a SIM card module, fingerprint module, air quality module, flash memory module, and camera module.
The core Blocks watchface includes traditional smartwatch functionality (phone notifications, activity tracking, voice control, color touch screen, haptic feedback).
BLOCKS is a modular smartwatch that’s now on Kickstarter. On the simpler side, there’s the battery module, which extends the day-and-a-half battery life of the Core’s 400 mAh battery by about 20 percent.
The device will work with devices running iOS 8+ and iPhone 4s and up, as well as Android 4.0 and above.
New modules will be released on a rolling basis, “ensuring that you are connected with the latest tech as soon as it comes out”, the company said. BLOCKS Wearables also plans to offer a BLOCKStore where you can get apps and modules. Since then, the Blocks Wearables team has made significant progress, and a functional device should ship to your door by next May, assuming you’re ready to back it up on Kickstarter – and that everything goes well during manufacturing. But for $285, you can get a BLOCKS core and four modules of your choice. The wearable is cashing in on the recent trend of round smartwatches, and the prospect of being able to swap modules on your smartwatch certainly sounds appealing.
