Young Bear Cub Shot Dead After Going On Rampage Through School
Armed police responded to reports of an Asian black bear inside the school in Raohe county, in north-eastern China’s Heilongjiang Province, which had wandered into the corridors at 5am in the morning as pupils slept in dormitories.
Police in Raohe County received call at about 5 a.m. that a black bear was in the county’s No. 3 Middle School, putting the lives of students in dormitories at risk. A surveillance video uploaded by CCTV online shows as the bear makes its way into the school. Later, the animal is seen acting aggressively and running in the hall of the building. However, the firing of the bear has caused netizens to sympathise with the dead animal. “It was growling and could have attacked someone at any moment”, the rescue team said. An eyewitness has also disclosed that the bear was “roaring” and it looked “upset and aggressive”.
Police officers first tried stopping the bear using a tranquiliser gun but the bear became increasingly aggressive forcing then to gun it down.
Black bears are listed as protected animals in China’s National Protection Wildlife Law, which stipulates that anyone hunting or catching bears without permits will be subject to severe punishment. However, critics say it could be linked to rapid deforestation due to urban expansion.
A black bear was recently reported swimming across the border river in August and shocked the residents of a village when it found its way into a local’s house.
