Young girl gives message to pope
A five-year-old Sophie Cruz breached the barriers to deliver Pope Francis a personal letter.
According to the Associated Press, “the moment unfolded as perfectly as it was scripted by members of a coalition of Los Angeles-based immigration rights groups”.
Her parents later said they were over the moon that Sophie could deliver the message.
Sophie shied back when a bodyguard came near.
The immigration crisis in the USA had been hotly debated by both the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates.
Sophie says she rarely sees her father, because he works many days from 4:30 p.m.to 3 a.m.in a Los Angeles factory. Sophie said her hope is that he can bring change to US immigration laws.
When the Pope finally arrived, the crowd took photos, cheered and some even held up children for the Pope to bless.
“I believe I have the right to live with my parents”, Sophie told the AP after her moment with the pope.
Sophie: “All immigrants just like my dad help feed this country”.
The young girl came all the way from California to see Francis, with a t-shirt and a letter.
Sophie Cruz, whose parents are undocumented immigrants from Mexico, had attempted to get close to Pope Francis on another occasion, but was unsuccessful.
The case in the United States, as Gutierrez identified it, is to save the stalled program known as Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Legal Permanent Residents (DAPA). But her emotional plea was also on behalf of the millions of undocumented immigrants in the country.
DAPA, which would permit illegal immigrants to seek permission to legally work and stay in the US, was blocked by a judge in Texas after 26 states protested against it.
The survey of 1,001 US adults was conducted September 18-21 for Bloomberg Politics by Selzer & Co. of Des Moines, Iowa.
Pope Francis, who introduced himself to Americans as “the son of an immigrant family”, is known for being sympathetic to the plight of migrants. Her cause is one that this pope is receptive to: On Thursday, Pope Francis made a almost hour-long speech before Congress calling for the U.S.to display greater openness to immigrants as well as refugees.
Sophie and her father will appear at a rally and news conference Wednesday evening at the Capitol.
“It is striking also that on this trip Pope Francis visited the Little Sisters of the Poor, a Catholic charity, a convent of nuns, who have taken vows of poverty”, said Sen.
