Young migrant found dead in Channel Tunnel
A French spokesman from Eurotunnel in France said paramedics were called to the scene after a person was found unconscious near the rail line.
A teenage refugee has been killed trying to cross the Channel Tunnel into Britain, officials said.
“It’s a shame that such an event happened”, the spokesperson added.
The dead youth was discovered near the tunnel entrance by rescue workers early Thursday, the Calais prefecture said. The young boy was 15-17 years old.
In one extraordinary attempt to enter the United Kingdom illegally, one Sudanese migrant managed to walk nearly the full length of the 31 Channel Tunnel before being arrested by British police half a mile from the end. He was hit by a freight train.
More than 11 people have died while trying to cross from France to Britain, either in the tunnel or near it. Security has been beefed up by Britain as well as France at the entrance of the Channel Tunnel, which connects the two countries after repeated attempts have been made to rush the site as a group, according to The Washington Post. Meanwhile in Calais, French riot police have moved in to clear the refugee camps sprung up around the coastal town, firing tear gas and bulldozing the tent cities into the ground.
