Your chance to welcome home Wales’ Euro 2016 heroes
This footage captures the incredible moment thousands of Welsh fans belted out their country’s national anthem just moments before the Euro 2016 semi-final – despite being hundreds of miles away from the action.
A celebratory open top bus tour around the city, starting at Cardiff Castle, is planned, while a sell-out crowd of 33,000 fans is expected to gather at the Cardiff City Stadium to greet the players.
Chris Coleman’s team meet Portugal on Lyon on Wednesday night in the semi-final, and while not many Wales fans will be in attendance, back home in Cardiff, they are going all out to make the game as accessible to their fans.
“It would be fantastic to see the Welsh Government working with the Football Association of Wales and other stakeholders to ensure an event in North Wales, following Friday’s homecoming in Cardiff”.
There will be entertainment on stage from 5.15pm – including music from Manic Street Preachers – while the players and staff presentation will begin at 6.45pm.
The event at the stadium is due to finish at around 7.30pm.
BBC Wales will follow the homecoming celebrations on TV, radio and online in English and in Welsh.
The players created a club atmosphere during their month-long stay in the tournament, and dished out a number of forfeits as punishments for various misdemeanours, such as being late to team meetings. “The performance on the pitch has been magnificent, the impression our fans have left on France and the rest of the world equally so – you’ve all done your country very, very proud”.
