Your Trendy Top Knot Bun Might Make You Bald One Day
In a similar vein, the people of science are here to ruin another unstoppable trend for us all: The despicable “man-bun” may be causing baldness in the fashionable men who sport them.
While that’s the style that many have opted for, it seems that the long term effects of it may well be unwanted, as this particular craze can lead to baldness.
Although this condition is most commonly seen in women, Sabra Sullivan, a dermatologist in Jackson, Miss., recently told Mic that she has seen an increase in male cases. The hairs at the front of your head feel the most tension when you pull your hair back tightly, and that’s why they’re the first to fall out.
The solution, if you’re insistent on wearing a man bun or pony tail, is to wear it loose, or else get a different hair cut before there’s no more hair to cut. “I would say five years ago I saw women with it but never men, now we’re seeing it in men”, Salinger told The Huffington Post Australia. Some guys swear by them, while others wanna run around hipster villages with a pair of Fiskars, lopping off topknots in a gleeful rage.
The key here is that traction alopecia doesn’t magically happen because you put your hair up in a man bun, top knot, or even ponytail one day.
“Men don’t realize in the future they’re asking for trouble.”
Sure, traction alopecia is a thing. “Or if you’re going to do it, just don’t do it tightly”, said Salinger.
Unlike man buns, dreadlocks weigh down hair follicles with added weight as the hair grows. And eventually, if you keep plucking it, it won’t grow back.
The condition isn’t specific to men, and overly tight hair pulling can cause problems regardless of gender.
And to those men who are joining the new man-braid movement, you should be anxious, too.
