Yumans march for MLK day
An extraordinary man who “had a dream” for social and political equality for all.

Dozens of people watch and remember Doctor Martin Luther King at the Lighthouse Community Center in Lynchburg.

State Holiday Commission organized at Charleston’s Asbury United Methodist Church as part of a day of events that included a bell ringing ceremony at the State Capitol Complex. A group of middle schoolers from WHC and Shiloh Baptist Church also painted benches that will be placed across the city at different locations of faith.

MLK was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis Tennessee.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. spoke of Dr. King’s unfinished work. The painting of the murals was organized by the organization City Year, which seeks to provide support to students in low-income communities.
While many were there to celebrate the life of the late civil rights leader, they were also working to continue efforts toward Dr. King’s dream.
Young and old did come together.
“This is not my first time coming and it won’t be the last”.
The theme of freedom is especially meaningful this year, she said, because it is the 50th anniversary of her father’s trip to Chicago to highlight the need for open and fair housing. At Monday’s rally, all three candidates took a strong stance on how to strengthen education in the nation.
