Yvonne Craig, TV’s Batgirl, dies at 78
“According to the actress” website, Craig died “from complications brought about from breast cancer that had metastasized to her liver”.
She joined Batman for what would be the show’s third and final season in 1967, portraying Commissioner Gordon’s daughter and librarian Barbara Gordon by day, crime-fighter Batgirl by night for 26 episodes.
William Shatner has led tributes on social media to his late “Star Trek” co-star Yvonne Craig following her death on Monday.
Who was your first celebrity crush? Her autobiography From Ballet to the Batcave and Beyond was published in September 2000.
The dancer remained with the troupe for three years before being selected to play the part of Elena de la Madrid in the 1959 movie “The Young Land“.
In an interview with CNN earlier this year, Craig explained how she got into acting while she was still touring as a dancer.
While Craig looked stunning in her skin tight costume, her Batgirl was really a Girl Scout at heart, the antithesis of the show’s naughty Catwoman. “As Batgirl she was one of America’s sweethearts”. “I did a lot of work with a cult following, but Batgirl is the thing most people remember”. “Half the time she was covered with a helmet that made her look like Darth Vader”.
In later years, Craig worked as a real estate broker, did voice over work for the Nickelodeon cartoon “Olivia”, and, with her sister, went into the prepaid phone card business.
The marriage was dissolved in 1962 and in 1988 she married Kenneth Aldrich, who survives her.
“Yvonne was a very private person, so from the onset of her battle with cancer, she chose to share with immediate family and very close friends”, the statement read.
