Zharnel Hughes into 200 metres final with Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin
A win for the Jamaican in today’s final (7:55 a.m.) will make it four straight 200m titles, an extension of his own record for back-to-back wins at the World Championships.
But Gatlin warned he would be ready for the final, where Bolt will be chasing his fourth successive world 200m title. Having been the favorite heading into the 100m final, Gatlin failed to produce his best as Bolt again delivered on the big stage, applying pressure that left his rival mistiming his lunge toward the line. I’m looking forward to that. “I am just going to get it massaged, ice it up a bit and I should be fine”.
“You save as much energy as possible, because you’re going to need it”, Bolt said.
“I’m a little anxious about my fitness”, Bolt said.
Usain Bolt’s coach, Glen Mills, hopes the Jamaican can recover from sore legs to complete a world championship sprint double for the third time in his career after what he rated as the athlete’s toughest win yet.
On Monday, the camera caught the American sprinter standing on the podium after receiving his 100-meter silver medal at the world championships and gesturing toward someone in the crowd who was bothering his mother.
Jamaica will also be counting on its quartet of Stephenie-Ann McPherson, Novlene Williams-Mills, Christine Day and Shericka Jackson in the 400m final, who face the starter at 7:40 a.m.
“I can run faster than the current world record”, said Dibaba, who set a world record in the 1,500 last month.
Bolt was grinning widely after crossing in 19.95 seconds, coasting for about 60 metres and checking the stadium screens high up in the stands of the Bird’s Nest to see if someone could come close.
Taylor produced the second-best triple jump of all time with a leap of 18.21 metres on his final attempt to pad his lead over rival Pablo Pichardo of Cuba. “Feels good”.
Russia, a country which has won multiple medals in the past number of World Championships, only have one medal so far. “But I thought I would have a chance if I ran to the best of my ability”.
Aside from Bolt, middle-distance superstars Genzebe Dibaba and David Rudisha will race the finals of the women’s 1500 and men’s 800 metres respectively.
For the second time in a week Usain Bolt beat Justin Gatlin over the line. Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes finished in an impressive fifth place with a personal best of 20.02 seconds.
A man riding a two-wheel vehicle and holding a video camera upended Bolt in the excitement of the celebrations of his 200-meter victory on Thursday, losing control after hitting a metal rail on the side of the track and barging into Bolt from behind.
