Zika virus may lead to rise in women’s deaths from unsafe abortions
In the United States, a total of 31 cases of Zika have been documented since previous year, all involving people who were infected while they were out of the country.
Previous year the virus was discovered in Brazil, and in the past eight months has been found in 23 countries in South, Central and North America. The Health Ministry of Peru held fumigation campaigns to prevent the spreading Zika virus, according to local press.
China faces a risk of the import of Zika virus but the possibility of an outbreak is low, the National Health and Family Planning Commission said on Friday.
Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites, and can’t be transmitted from person to person.
Zika is most commonly passed on through the “Aedes aegypti” mosquito.
There now is no vaccine or treatment for the Zika virus. “Pregnant women, as well as women who wish to become pregnant and who are planning to travel to areas where the virus is circulating, should discuss their plans with a health professional”. There have been outbreaks in 26 countries, along with a spike in microcephaly, a defect that causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads.
Dr. Kurt Barnhart, chair of the Pennsylvania section of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said the virus isn’t to be taken lightly, but isn’t as serious as many fear.
The World Health Organization warned this week that the virus is “spreading explosively” in the Americas, with three million to four million cases expected this year.
It was subsequently realized that one of the samples was infected by the Zika virus. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). None are pregnant women. Pakistan should also issue a strict travel ban on pregnant women and couples that are travelling to the affected countries. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.
