Zimbabwe’s Mr Ugly competition victor branded ‘too handsome’ as result sparks riot
“Unfortunately, Sere’s festive mood was quickly dampened by previous victor William Masvinu, who criticized the new champion of being, “too handsome” since “…he is ugly only when he opens his mouth”.
Pageant organiser David Machowa told Associated Press he launched the contest to remove the stigma of ugliness.
“The show last night was very successful, and I still have plans to host Mr Ugly world”, he said. “I did not lose today”, he further added.
Now, Mr Sere is hoping for the same fame and fortune.
He sees winning the competition as a chance to make it onto TV.
Pageant judges have crowned a new victor of Zimbabwe s 4th annual Mister Ugly contest, upsetting supporters of the crowd favorite and prompting rioting at the event. Mison Sere beat out 35 other entrants for the coveted title, surviving three rounds of runway modeling at a nightclub in Harare.
Earlier this year, Miss Zimbabwe victor Emily Kachote was bullied on social media by angry pageant fans saying she was ugly and did not deserve to win the competition.
She was later forced to step down when just two weeks into her reign, images surfaced of her posing nude – which incidentally also brought down her predecessor. In fact, one judge, university student Abigail Mataranyika, suggested that a few contestants thought they were ugly enough to get away with not putting in any effort. We need natural ugliness from birth.
He said: “Looks are God given. That cost him the crown”.
This year’s competition attracted a record 36 entries, a year after it was suspended because of a lack of sponsorship.
