Zimmerman, Murphy Homer to Back Ross in Nationals’ 7-5 Win
Parents with sons on different teams in professional sports face a conundrum when their offspring play against each other. Which jersey to wear?
Max Scherzer didn’t like what San Diego Padres’ hitters were doing to him early, so he Pitching Coach Mike Maddux and Washington Nationals’ catcher Wilson Ramos straightened things out in what ended up being a solid start in Petco Park. The baseball mom choose to support Team Ross and she wore a custom jersey that showed her support for both players.
Really, the only thing Myers didn’t do was connect with Brandon Maurer on a no-look flip on a bounding ball that glanced off his glove and then off Brandon Maurer’s in the seventh inning to allow the Nationals to take a 2-1 lead.
The jersey features a red Nationals alternate on the right half with a curly W on the front and a vertical No. 41.
“It never felt like he was out of control of the game”. And for the second straight game, the Nationals’ decisive rally started with two out.
So was Padres manager Andy Green.
“They’re a good hitting team”, Pomeranz said.
“For me, it’s just putting myself in situations where I’ve got to stay away from that”.
“They outplayed us the last two days and I’m not real happy about it”, Baker said.
Ross made his big league debut on June 6, 2015, and he beat the Padres 4-2 on August 27 in Washington. They’re also 13-3 in Scherzer’s last 16 starts when their opponent allows five runs or more in its previous game, as the Padres did last night when they fell 7-5 to the Nats.
Claimed by the Padres when he was released by Colorado during spring training, the 28-year-old Friedrich, who, ironically, was, like Ross, the 25th overall pick in a draft (2008), is 3-1 with a 2.12 ERA in six starts for the Padres since he was promoted from Triple-A El Paso on May 13.
Padres: LHP Christian Friedrich (3-1, 5.37) has made the most of his opportunity as injuries and trades upended the rotation.
Harper went over the wall in left field for his 14th homer, a two-out, two-strike, two-run shot that brought in Jayson Werth, who had singled.
But the Nationals scored again in the top of the seventh, marking the sixth time in two games that Washington scored in the top of an inning after the Padres scored. Norris hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Solarte and Alexei Ramirez lined a single to center to score Upton and put San Diego up 5-3. And they’ve lost six of their last seven games.
Jankowski had appeared in 45 games prior to Sunday’s contest and was batting.241 with a home run and three RBI this season, so he’s hardly the kind of replacement the Padres can rely on in a long-term scenario. Myers stole second, but Scherzer struck out Matt Kemp and retired Wallace on a fly to left.NOTES: Padres RHP Tyson Ross threw from the bullpen mound for the first time since Opening Day. He’s not expected to return until after the All-Star break.
Padres: RHP Colin Rea (3-3, 5.37) will be looking for his first victory in more than a month. And just like Saturday, Johnson gave some of that right back with the Nationals pulling within 2-1 in the second.
