Zinedine Zidane includes son on Real Madrid’s squad for UEFA Super Cup
Wales forward Gareth Bale has been left out of Real Madrid’s squad for Tuesday’s Uefa Super Cup against fellow Spanish side Sevilla.
Suspicions about Bale’s absence have been confirmed, along with that of Cristiano Ronaldo, while Kroos has been rested after he too did not resume full training until Saturday.
Ramos started his professional career with Sevilla before making the move to Madrid in 2005.
Ronaldo, 31, is on holiday until Wednesday, after having helped Portugal to a surprise triumph at Euro 2016.
The UEFA Super Cup has been running since 1972 when Ajax beat Rangers over two legs to win the first edition of the tournament. With team captain Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, and Marcelo manning the backfield, Los Vikingos are still favored to win their second Super Cup title in the last three years.
The traditional clash between Champions League and Europa League winners takes place this week as Real Madrid take on Sevilla.
Real expectedly has the upperhand even if they are undermanned, but Sevilla could pull off the win in a close match as they had been the fitter team, winning all six of their preseason matches so far.
‘I want my team to focus more on the goal in front of them than the one behind them, ‘ he said.
Remarkably, only four players from that 2014 Super Cup defeat – Vicente Iborra, Vitolo, Nico Pareja and Daniel Carrico – are still in the Sevilla squad, thanks to the club’s crafty policy of buying cheap and selling expensively.
The latest players to be sold off are strikers Kevin Gameiro and Fernando Llorente, without Luciano Vietto arriving from Atletico Madrid to replace them.
