Zola twitter story in development for James Franco to direct
Well, it’s legit getting made into a movie. “This story long. So I met this white bitch at Hooters…”
There were a few inconsistencies between the Twitter tale and the real thing, as Rolling Stone journalist David Kushner uncovered, but not a lot.
Still, for reasons of factual accuracy, the film is going to be based more on the article that the Twitter stream. Considering Kushner describes Zola’s tale as reading “like Spring Breakers meets Pulp Fiction, as told by Nicki Minaj”, in his article, Franco’s involvement makes sense. Killer Films’ Christine Vachon and David Hiojosa, and Gia Walsh and Kara Baker of Gigi Films will also produce.
Rolling Stone got in touch with Zola and the story’s major players after it caught fire online.
Franco will direct from a script by Neel and Mike Roberts.
In Zola’s case it’s evident that she will certainly receive a payout for the rights to her story, but I can’t help but wonder how much autonomy she has over who is at the helm telling her narrative?
The controversial story unfolded the dark side of strippers and sex trafficking led to the arrest of “Nigerian pimp, ‘Z.'” Akporode “Rudy” Uwedjojevwe was charged with sexual assault, sex trafficking, battery, attempted pandering and felony counts in Nevada.
Franco, who is wrapping up a movie about the making of the cult classic “The Room” titled “The Disaster Artist”, is also represented by Untitled Entertainment and Sloane Offer.
