Zoolander 2 Trailer Gets Record Numbers For A Comedy
The trailer for Zoolander 2, the long, long-awaited sequel to the brilliant 2001 comedy, has set a new record for the most views of a comedy trailer in one week.
Then again, last month a trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” racked up 112 million views in just 24 hours.
Zoolander 2, the sequel to the hit comedy Zoolander, brings back Owen Wilson as male model Hansel, Will Ferrel as evil fashion mogul Mugatu, Christine Taylor as investigative journalist Matilda, and of course, Ben Stiller as the world’s best male model, Derek Zoolander.
Added buzz came from protests over the sight gag of an eyebrow-free Benedict Cumberbatch as an androgynous model, which sparked accusations of transphobia. The aforementioned original cast members are joined by Penelope Cruz, Justin Bieber, Kristen Wiig, Miley Cyrus, and Billy Zane – who was also in the original. His cameo actually also doubles as his death scene, as his assassination and the deaths of other “beautiful” celebrities cause Interpol to seek Derek and Hansel’s help.
Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) may only have one look, but apparently, the Blue Steel still gets the people going.
Paramount Pictures’ “Zoolander 2” has broken the record for the most online views for a comedy trailer since the promo launched November 18, having been watched 52.2 million times in its first week of release. The numbers in that race will start coming in on February 12.
