Zuckerberg is a dad, and he’s giving away most of his money
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, have welcomed a healthy baby girl.
Mark Zuckerberg announced the birth of his daughter Tuesday, along with his commitment to donating 99% of his Facebook shares to charity over his lifetime. In the letter, the Silicon Valley power couple and Haute 100 listers shared they will donate 99 percent of Zuckerberg’s Facebook shares, valued at $45 billion.
“Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children”. You’ve given us hope that together we can build this world for Max and all children.
For her birth, we wrote a letter to her about the world we hope she grows up in.

Zuckerberg outlined his philanthropic mission, focused on “advancing human potential and promoting equality”, in a letter to his newborn daughter.
Filings made with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, said that Zuckerberg “plans to sell or gift no more than $1 billion of Facebook stock each year for the next three years and that he intends to retain his majority voting position”. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. Facebook recently announced that it expanded its paid parental leave for all employees to four months.
The charity, called the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, will be used to further a number of causes globally including harnessing green energy, curing diseases, reducing poverty and promoting equality. The couple did say once they’ve settled into their new “family rhythm” and return from maternity and paternity leaves, they will share more information.
