2 killed, more than 30 hurt when circus tent collapses
The tent collapsed when a storm hit with 60 mile an hour gusts and hail. Our very deepest condolences and prayers go out to the families whose lives were affected.
Vincent said Young’s biggest passion was his family and he was never without a photograph of his two daughters.
A father and his daughter were killed and over 30 others were hurt.
Caudill was cited in 1997 for not providing adequate veterinary care, failing to maintain complete records and not providing proper animal enclosures.
The Youngs lived in Concord, Vermont.
They were identified Tuesday as 41-year-old Robert Young and 8-year-old Annabelle Young.
The operator of the circus, Sarasota, Florida-based Walker worldwide Events Inc., said on its Facebook page that the cast and crew were shocked by what had happened.
He said the circus has been cooperative in the investigation.
After a circus tent collapse that killed two spectators, questions have arisen about how the circus operator could have prepared for and put on a show at the town’s fairgrounds without getting a permit or having the giant canopy inspected. He said state law would need to be examined further to decide whether a criminal violation would apply.
The posting states that the circus is “still coming” but that the shows would be “open air”.
There was a severe storm warning for the area. Thirty-two people have been taken to hospitals.
Walker global Events has canceled the rest of its New Hampshire shows, but it next show is scheduled for Sunday in Sanford; Maine’s Fire Marshal, Joe Thomas, said at this point, they have no reason to not let the circus continue in Maine.
Degnan said his office is investigating whether local officials knew or should have known the show was taking place.
But when NEWS CENTER called the town of Hiram, where the circus is scheduled after Sanford, officials told us everything was left up to the state; which goes back to that one inspection the fire marshal’s office did back in Dover Foxcroft.
In response to a Right To Know request by The Associated Press, Lancaster fire officials confirmed Walker worldwide did not have the place-of-assembly permit required by state law for the performance but had received the permit for shows in 2010 and 2011.
Their names have not been released.
Degnan said Wednesday that the number of injured rose from 32 to more than 50, mostly because several people drove themselves to doctors and reported their injuries later. Authorities said Monday night that at least 22 people were injured.
Authorities also are looking at how the tent was put up at the Lancaster Fairgrounds, about 90 miles north of the capital of Concord. Birdsell said. “Then we’ll talk to local officials, find out if they have local statutes and if not, start from there”.
