2 trains derail in central India, casualties unknown
Al Jazeera’s Nidhi Dutt, reporting from New Delhi, said there were reports that at least 300 people had been rescued but witnesses were giving accounts “that many people may have been washed away”. Dozens were rushed to hospital.
The Janata Express also derailed within minutes of the first accident while crossing the same bridge over the Machak river.
“Seven bogies of Kamayani Express and engine plus three coaches of Janata Express have been derailed between Khirkiya and Bhirangi stations close to Harda“, Mathur stated.
Kumar, former Railway Minister, said in a statement that officials of the state have been directed to provide all possible help to the passengers.
“It’s totally unacceptable. It’s a symptom of a deep-rooted cancer in the railway system”, Dinesh Trivedi told reporters.
A special train, carrying a team of 100 doctors and rescuers, is on its way to the accident spot, the official said.
“I am on my way to the train accident spot near Harda to personally oversee relief and rescue ops. along with CS and DG”, he tweeted. “There was no problem”.
One of the trains travelling from Mumbai appeared to have been hit by a sudden surge of water on the swollen Machak river, derailing the last four to five carriages, railway ministry spokesman Anil Saxena said.
Television footage showed carriages lying on their sides in a field of mud and medical supplies piled on a nearby station platform.
“It shook like a tree in storm”.
The trains which are cancelled for tomorrow are: 12167 LTT – Varanasi superfast, 51187 – Bhusaval to Katnai Passenger and 12165 LTT – Varanasi Super Fast Express.
A number of public figures have spoken out against what they deem the unsatisfactory safety conditions of India’s railway system, one of the most heavily trafficked in the world. Deeply pained over the loss of lives. Please convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
