BA plane makes emergency landing at Heathrow
The Boeing 777 aircraft is the same model that caught fire on a runway in Las Vegas on Tuesday. The 170 passengers and crew on the Boeing 777 escaped without serious injury.
While flight crews tell people to leave belongings behind in an evacuation, pilots say they seem increasingly inclined to grab whatever they brought on board.
“Examination of the material recovered from runway found several pieces of the high pressure compressor spool (approximately 7-8 inches in length)”. The following groups will be organized: powerplants, airworthiness (airplane structure, systems, and fire), flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder.
Meanwhile, the plane’s pilot Chris Henkey, from Reading, has said he is “unlikely” to fly a scheduled trip to Barbados, after which he was due to retire.
In an initial report into the fire, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said parts of the engine’s high pressure compressor component had been found on the runway.
A British Airways plane caught fire in Las Vegas forcing the pilots to abort take off, with two minor injuries being reported.
The early factual finding by the NTSB offers a crucial initial clue in to what may have caused Tuesday’s engine fire in Las Vegas.
The Boeing 777, built in 1998, had two GE90 engines made by GE Aviation. “I mean, we were out of the plane in just a couple of minutes and felt very safe the whole time”.
Jacob Steinberg, a writer for The Guardian and passenger on the plane, tweeted that he was asleep when it suddenly “came to a crashing halt”.
Aviation expert Julian Bray paid tribute to the way the passengers were guided to safety.
Aircraft records compiled by Flightglobal of England showed the engine underwent a heavy maintenance check and inspection in December 2005, which Goglia said was probably within the recommended service schedule.
All passengers have been treated to free local hotel rooms by British Airways and have been accommodated on other flights. By the end of 2013, it had flown 76,618 hours, according to the British Civil Aviation Authority.
Cox said the planes crew and responding firefighters did exactly what was expected.
The union said for years it has advocated fewer passenger items in the cabin and for full-scale evacuation demonstrations when an aircraft is redesigned, especially if passenger capacity is increased.
