PM Narendra Modi speaks withnewly elected Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull
The man tipped to become Australia’s next treasurer Scott Morrison in a looming cabinet reshuffle angrily defended himself against accusations Friday he had betrayed former prime minister Tony Abbott.
Explaining why he would consider voting for Mr Malcolm Turnbull’s Liberal party for the first time, Mr Bassem Ibrahim said the new Prime Minister has “been wanting the position for quite a while”.
So what is happening down under? However, the events of last Monday evening confirm the survey contentions and provide salutary lessons which our leaders, be they political, business, religious, community or trade union ignore at their peril. But that misses how parliamentary democracy is supposed to work.
But the new Prime Minister is not renowned for collaboration. Just days after he took over as prime minister of Australia the attacks have started, with opponents accusing him of selling his ideological soul on issues from climate change to gay marriage in order to snatch the nation’s top job.
Environment Minister Greg Hunt introduced amendments to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act into Parliament late last month, following litigation that sidelined the $16.5 billion Adani coal mine in Queensland.
“‘The questions from the leader of the opposition get worse and worse”, Turnbull said during question time.
One of the most striking findings of my research is that national leadership challenges are becoming more common. “The actions taken by Malcolm Turnbull are not about Australia and they are not about the people of Canning“. Scholars, such as Francoise Boucek, argue that factions can be a positive force, institutionalizing different opinions and hence stabilizing the party. But more had been hoped of Turnbull, particularly after Abbott’s brutal anti-renewables rhetoric had chased away worldwide investors.
But it’s not just Australia.
“They are there on the list that is before you and you have to deal with it not on the basis of politics but on the basis of the best available science”.
We have seen what happens electorally to governments that tear themselves apart. He lost his office despite pleading with ministers against a change in leadership, which had been the hallmark of the previous, Labor government.
“The nature of politics has changed in the past decade”, he said.
It is understood Senator McGrath was still widely traumatised by the Newman result – which for many political insiders re-wrote the rule book on the expected longevity of governments – even though he was not directly involved in the campaign.
“Although he was following the party line, there was always uncertainty as to how strongly Turnbull personally supported that [MTM] approach, and his elevation to the PM spot may allow for an NBN recalibration”.
The big difference between Australia and other democracies is in how party leaders are selected. It was – until 2012 – the only method of selection in the Australian Labor Party.
Mr Turnbull, who is far more publicly popular than Mr Abbott, launched a sudden leadership challenge and won in a 54 to 44 vote of Liberal MPs.
At a separate news conference, also convened before the vote, Mr. Abbott said: “The prime ministership of this country is not a prize or a plaything to be demanded”.
Some commentators are calling on Malcolm Turnbull to appease the conservatives by sticking to current policy.
Mr Cannon-Brookes said Mr Turnbull, who was an early investor in internet services and has championed innovation as communications minister, needed to translate his passion into a rebranding of Australia.
