House Tries to Yank Planned Parenthood Funding
In something out of a dystopian nightmare, the US House of Representatives has voted to stop federal funding to Planned Parenthood for a year.
The Senate is expected to vote Tuesday, two days before Pope Francis speaks to a joint meeting of Congress, on a bill that bans all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, but Democrats have the numbers to defeat it. Planned Parenthood denied the allegations, saying the tissue is given for medical research and that the videos were highly edited. “These videos show that this is not one or two clinics acting on their own, but these practices are a part of the Planned Parenthood business model”.
“This legislation will redirect millions of dollars to federally qualified health centers, which offers similar, and some locations offer even more, women’s health care services than Planned Parenthood“, Poliquin said in a statement.
Planned Parenthood here says it gets $3.2 million in federal funding for women’s health services, and that its clinics were not involved in fetal tissue donations.
During Wednesday night’s Republican presidential primary debate, former Hewlett Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina delivered a dramatic attack on the organization and dared the president and Hillary Clinton to watch the videos.
However, CBS News and the Washington Post report there is no such video on the Planned Parenthood tapes.
“The Republican effort to defund Planned Parenthood will cost this country more than we can afford”.
The other inflicts criminal penalties on doctors who don’t try saving infants born alive during abortions.
There is one Planned Parenthood center that serves South Dakota. Failure to pass a continuing resolution to keep government running by October . 1 would result in a partial federal shutdown.
Both measures passed easily, largely on party lines.
The fight over abortion touches an emotional hotspot among each side’s most loyal partisans and could be pivotal as each party seeks female voters. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) voted present because he said the bill’s language wasn’t strong enough.
“Our response as a people and a nation to these horrors shown in these videos is vital to everything those lying out in Arlington Cemetery died to save”, Franks said. Alabama’s lone Democrat, Terri Sewell of Birmingham, voted against the anti-abortion measures.
“This bill is dumb, it’s foolish, and it’s mean-spirited”, said Rep. Lois Frankel (D., Fla.).
Budget discussions are underway in Congress and Planned Parenthood could be a part of a compromise. Dean Heller, R-Nev., voted for the resolution. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, one of the presidential hopefuls.
Stewart urged the Senate to take up the Planned Parenthood funding issue, which could become a sticking point in federal budget discussions.
