At least 22 killed in Bangladesh stampede
DHAKA, Bangladesh – A crush at a Ramadan charity distribution event in Bangladesh has killed 23 people on Friday.
Sources say that the stampede happened when many tried to force their way in.
Television footage showed scenes of devastation, with hundreds of torn and blood-spattered sandals abandoned at the gate of the house, which sits beside the man’s chewing tobacco factory.
We know this much so far about Harper Lee’s new book: Atticus Finch is 72 and suffering from rheumatoid arthritis; Scout is a grown woman who has a suitor most anxious to marry her.
At around 5:00 a.m. local time (2300 UTC/GMT), after morning prayers, the small gates opened and the crowd rushed forward through the narrow opening, resulting in at least two children and 21 women killed, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
“We have handed over 24 bodies to the relatives”, Mr Islam said.
Numerous victims were ferried by cycle rickshaws to a nearby hospital. “Many fell to the ground and trampled others.. and they died”.
“Too many people came and they were afraid they wouldn’t be able to get the clothes so they pushed each other”.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker of the parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury expressed their sympathy to the victims’ family members.
Each family would be paid 10,000 taka (around $125) to cover the cost of the funerals of their relatives, according to the religious affairs ministry.
Six people have been detained by the authorities, including the businessman, who did not request police presence at his house on the occasion.
